populus tremula

populus tremula
material: glass, paper, film
size: ca. 25 x 25 x 5 cm
year: 2000

“Populus tremula” was created after a trip to the USA, focusing on New York and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

The leaves are from the famous aspen trees. In autumn, they turn bright yellow and stand out beautifully against the gray rocky slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

The paper for the small containers for the glass panes with the images of the leaves was purchased in a New York store in Chinatown. It is joss paper, which is ritually burned at Chinese funerals as a burnt offering to appease the spirits. In the center of this paper is gold-colored hammered metal. This is supposed to represent the value of this metal and drive away evil spirits. The small paper cubes are folded using origami techniques and hold the layered glass pieces.
